Event Porta Potty Rentals in the Bay Area: How Many You Need and How Booking Works

Updated October 2026 · By Daniel Tom, owner, Bay Area Sanitation

Short answer: For a Bay Area event, plan on about one porta potty per 50 guests for a four-hour event. Add hand wash stations wherever food is served and make at least 5% of each cluster ADA accessible. Book at least a week ahead. Event rentals are a flat rate for up to a week, with delivery and pickup scheduled when you book.

How many restrooms does an event need?

Start with one unit per 50 guests for about four hours. Add units for longer events, and also when alcohol, food or a lot of kids are involved. If the event is open to the public, at least 5% of the units in each cluster, and never fewer than one, should be accessible under the ADA standards (U.S. Access Board guide).

Which units work for which events?

Event What usually works
Backyard party or block party Standard or deluxe flushable units, plus a hand wash station. Units are placed in front of the property, not in the backyard.
Wedding or formal event Deluxe flushable units or a restroom trailer (needs water and power)
Festival, fair or public event Rows of standard units with hand wash stations and ADA units in each cluster

How do booking, payment and cancellation work?

  • Book at least a week ahead. Event rentals are a flat rate for up to a week.
  • We take a 50% deposit when you order, and the balance is due seven days before delivery.
  • Cancel more than seven days before delivery for a full refund. Between seven days and two business days out, you get 50% back. Inside two business days, the full amount is charged.
  • We don’t offer refunds for weather.
  • We deliver Monday through Friday, 7 AM to 4 PM, and pickup is scheduled when you book.

Most standard rentals run about $170–$225, covering up to 28 days (see current prices). Full details are in our terms and conditions.

Do I need a permit for an event in a park or on the street?

Often, yes. Parks and street closures usually come with their own event permits, and in San Francisco, short-term sidewalk or street placements fall under the SF Public Works Temporary Occupancy permit. Check with the venue or city before you order.
